A study of health related physical fitness and plasma homocysteine concentration

Introduction Regular exercise has been known to prevent from cardiovascular disease. Reduction of Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), which is changed by exercise or physical fitness level is related to exercise deficit, decreased BMR, hypertension, obesity and dyslipoproteinemia. Level of homocysteine is recently considered to be an independent risk factor of the cardiovascular disease. Several studies already showed the relationship between plasma homocysteine level (tHcy) and age, sex, blood pressure, and cholesterol. The purpose of this study is to investigate 1)the changes of tHcy with aging, 2) the variation of blood lipid profiles, and 3) the effect of exercise on tHcy. Methods VO2max, physical fitness level, glucose, insulin, lipid profiles, and homocysteine level of 143 women were measured. Subjects were classified by 3 age groups (10-29 years: 82, 30-59 years: 9, 60-79 years: 52). Collected data were statistically treated and analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficiency. Results 1) BMI, systolic and diastolic BP increased by aging (p<0.01). 2) VO2max decreased by aging (10-29 years Vs. 60-79 years; p<0.001) (10-29 years Vs. 30-59 years; p<0.001). 3) Homocysteine level increased by aging. (10-29 years Vs 60-79 years; p<0.001). 4) Cholesterol, TG, LDL-C increased by aging.(10-29 years Vs 60-79 years; p<0.001) (30-59 years Vs. 60-79) years; p<0.01). 5) HDL-C decreased by aging. (10-29 years Vs. 60-79 years; p<0.001) (30-59 years Vs. 60-79 years; p<0.05). ApoA-1 showed no difference by aging. ApoB increased with aging (10-29 vs 60-79; p<0.001) Conclusion Increased the physical activity level and exercise training may not only increase VO2max but also decrease plasma homocysteine level. Therefore if subsequent studies prove the effect physical activity on lowering homocysteine level, it can contribute to reduce the case of cardiovascular disease.

Key word: Health related physical fitness(maximal oxygen consumption, 12min running distance), homocysteine concentration, female.
